Car Accidents in India – Steps to remember

More than 150,000 people die each year in India due to traffic accidents. On an average, that comes to about 400 fatalities daily! At times, it doesn’t even matter if you were following the rules and driving safety; the accident is an accident be it anyone’s mistake. It can happen to anyone, at any time and any place. Hence, it becomes important to keep a few steps on the top of your mind; steps that should be taken immediately after an accident.
  • The scenario can be very chaotic if, god forbid, you end up in an accident. So the first thing to remember is to maintain the calm among the chaos and not to panic.
  • Immediately check for injuries and safety of the driver and the passengers. Ensure that everyone is physically and mentally safe.
  • In case of injuries or emergency, call an ambulance as soon as you can. This should be the priority; everything else can be taken care of later.
  • Check the vehicle and park it on the side of the road to not disturb the traffic. If in case the vehicle is damaged and can’t be moved, turn on the hazard lights and place the warning triangle beside it.
  • After these checks, make sure you speak with the other party involved in the accident. Get all the details like name, address and contact details of the person driving the car and also the car owner (if they are not the same). Make a note of the make and model of the car as well. If need be, talk to a couple of witnesses and take their details.
  • Do click pictures to gather information on damage caused to both the vehicles, injuries to both the sides and the location of the accident.
  • Unless mutually solved, involve the police. If they do not reach the site on time, make it to the nearest police station to file an FIR.
  • Contact your insurance company and discuss the issue.

Some points that must be always remembered are –
  • Drinking and driving is illegal, whatsoever
  • Driving without a license makes you the offender, however, be the accident
  • Be vigilant, as the onlookers might get violent, depending on the situation
  • Never drive away from the scene of the accident
  • Act humanely!
Even if you are not the one involved in the accident, some of these steps could always be taken as a passerby. You should stop over and help with whatever you can – by at least calling the authorities or the medical assistance.
